Understanding Odds

What Are Betting Odds and Why Do They Matter?

A lot of Filipinos start betting on instinct — you pick the team you like, throw in a few hundred pesos, and hope for the best. That's fine for casual fun, but if you actually want to win consistently, you need to understand betting odds. At magicjd, we believe informed bettors are better bettors, which is why we made this guide.

Betting odds do two things at once: they tell you how likely a bookmaker thinks an outcome is, and they tell you how much you stand to win if that outcome happens. The gap between what the odds imply and what you think will actually happen — that's where good bettors find value.

At magicjd.app, odds are updated in real time across all our markets — football, basketball, boxing, volleyball, and more. The line you see reflects the latest information available: recent team form, injuries, weather, public betting patterns. When you spot a line that doesn't look quite right based on your own knowledge, that's a potential edge.

The good news? You don't need a maths degree. Once you understand the three main formats — decimal, fractional, and American — and know how to convert them to implied probability, you'll be able to assess any bet on magicjd quickly and confidently.

Three Formats, One Platform

Decimal, Fractional & American — All Three Odds Formats Explained

Decimal Odds — The Format Used at MagicJD by Default

Decimal odds are the most straightforward format, and they're what magicjd displays by default. The number represents your total return — including your stake — for every ₱1 wagered. So if you see odds of 2.50, you get ₱2.50 back for every ₱1 you bet, meaning your profit is ₱1.50 per peso staked.

The formula is dead simple:

Total Return = Stake × Decimal Odds
Example: ₱500 × 2.50 = ₱1,250 total return (₱750 profit)

Odds below 2.00 mean the outcome is considered more likely than not (the favourite). Odds above 2.00 indicate an underdog or less likely outcome. Odds of exactly 2.00 represent a coin-flip, where you double your money if you win.

At magicjd, decimal odds are also the easiest to use for quick mental calculations — especially when you're betting live during a football match or a boxing bout and you need to assess value in seconds.

Decimal Example

Manila Dragons vs. Cebu Storm

PBA-style basketball match on magicjd. You back Manila Dragons to win.

Decimal Odds
1.85
Stake ₱1,000 → Return ₱1,850 → Profit ₱850
Implied Probability
54.1%
1 ÷ 1.85 = 0.541 → 54.1% chance implied by the line

Fractional Odds — Traditional Format Still Used in Some Markets

Fractional odds are the traditional format used in UK horse racing and still appear in some international sportsbooks. You'll encounter them occasionally when betting on global events at magicjd. The fraction represents your profit relative to your stake — unlike decimal which shows the total return.

With odds of 5/2, you win ₱5 profit for every ₱2 staked. So a ₱200 bet returns ₱700 total (₱500 profit + ₱200 stake back).

Profit = Stake × (Numerator ÷ Denominator)
Example: ₱200 × (5 ÷ 2) = ₱500 profit → ₱700 total return

Fractional odds can be a bit more mental gymnastics than decimal, which is why magicjd lets you switch your display preference in account settings. Use whichever format lets you assess bets fastest — there's no wrong answer.

Fractional Example

Boxing: Fighter A vs. Fighter B

World title fight. Fighter A is the underdog. You back Fighter A.

Fractional Odds
7/4
Stake ₱400 → Profit ₱700 → Total return ₱1,100
Implied Probability
36.4%
4 ÷ (7+4) = 0.364 → 36.4% implied chance of winning

American Odds — Common in Boxing and NBA Markets

American odds (also called moneyline odds) use a base of ₱100 and come in two forms: positive and negative. They're commonly used in boxing betting and NBA markets, and you'll see them regularly on magicjd's international sports section.

Negative odds (e.g., -150) indicate the favourite. The number tells you how much you need to bet to win ₱100 profit. So -150 means you bet ₱150 to win ₱100.

Positive odds (e.g., +130) indicate the underdog. The number tells you how much profit you win on a ₱100 bet. So +130 means you bet ₱100 to win ₱130.

Favourite: Profit = Stake ÷ (|Odds| ÷ 100)
Underdog: Profit = Stake × (Odds ÷ 100)
Example -150: ₱300 stake ÷ 1.5 = ₱200 profit
Example +130: ₱300 stake × 1.3 = ₱390 profit
American Example

NBA: LA Lakers vs. Golden State

You back Golden State as the underdog at magicjd.

American Odds (Underdog)
+125
Stake ₱1,000 → Profit ₱1,250 → Total ₱2,250
American Odds (Favourite)
-145
Stake ₱1,450 needed to win ₱1,000 profit

Value Betting

Finding Value in the Odds — The Skill That Separates Winners

Understanding the format is only the first step. The real skill in betting — the thing that separates occasional winners from consistent ones — is identifying value. A "value bet" is when the odds offered by magicjd imply a lower probability than what you genuinely believe the outcome is.

Here's a simple example: if magicjd lists the Azkals at decimal odds of 3.00 for a home match — implying a 33.3% chance of winning — but based on your research you believe they have a 45% chance, that's a value bet. You're getting better odds than the implied probability warrants.

Of course, finding value consistently takes work. You need to stay informed about team news, recent form, historical head-to-head stats, and context like whether a team has a big game the week after and might rotate their squad. MagicJD gives you real-time odds so you can monitor how lines move and spot situations where the market may have overreacted to recent news.

  • Line movement matters: When odds shift significantly after opening, it often signals new information — injury news, team sheet leaks, or sharp money from experienced bettors.
  • Implied probability totals: Adding the implied probabilities of all outcomes in a market usually exceeds 100%. The excess is the bookmaker's margin — knowing this helps you assess how competitive a market is.
  • Live odds are faster: In-play odds at magicjd update more quickly than you can process everything happening on the field. Having a clear match plan before kick-off — knowing what odds you'd bet at what moment — gives you a big edge in live markets.
  • Specialise first: The bettors who win long-term at magicjd tend to focus on one or two sports or markets they know deeply, rather than spreading bets across everything.

FAQ

Betting Odds — Frequently Asked Questions

MagicJD displays decimal odds by default, as this is the most intuitive format for most Filipino bettors. You can switch to fractional or American odds in your account settings at any time, and the change applies instantly across all markets and the bet slip.

Implied probability is the likelihood of an outcome that is "implied" by the odds offered. For decimal odds, the formula is: implied probability = 1 ÷ decimal odds. So odds of 2.50 imply a 40% probability (1 ÷ 2.50 = 0.40). If you believe the true probability is higher than 40%, the bet may offer value at those odds on magicjd.

Odds on magicjd are updated in real time based on incoming bets, new information (injuries, team news), and market movements. If the odds change between when you add a selection to your bet slip and when you confirm, the system will notify you of the updated price. You can choose to accept the new odds or decline and review your selection. This is standard practice across all reputable sportsbooks.

A parlay (also called an accumulator) combines multiple selections into a single bet. All selections must win for the bet to pay out. The odds are multiplied together: if you pick three matches with decimal odds of 1.80, 2.10, and 1.65, your combined parlay odds are 1.80 × 2.10 × 1.65 = 6.24. A ₱500 parlay at 6.24 returns ₱3,120. The higher payout comes with the risk that a single wrong pick loses the entire bet — magicjd's bet slip shows the combined odds and potential payout before you confirm.

MagicJD offers live betting odds across a wide range of sports including football (international and local leagues), basketball (NBA, PBA, UAAP), boxing (world title fights and Filipino bouts), volleyball, tennis, and more. The availability of live markets depends on the specific event, and some markets may only be pre-match. Check the Sports Betting and Boxing Betting sections on magicjd.app for the current live schedule.

Yes. Once you confirm a bet on magicjd, the odds are locked in at that price regardless of subsequent line movement. This is why timing matters — if you believe the current odds are favourable, placing the bet sooner locks in that value. The bet slip always shows the exact odds at the moment of confirmation.

If an event on magicjd is officially cancelled before it begins, all bets on that event are voided and stakes are returned to your wallet automatically. For postponements, the policy depends on how long the delay is — bets generally stand if the event is rescheduled within 24-48 hours, depending on the sport. Specific rules are displayed on the bet slip and in the Terms and Conditions. In a parlay, a voided selection is removed and the remaining odds are recalculated.
Bet Within Your Means

Understanding odds improves your decisions, but no system guarantees wins. Always set a betting budget before you start and treat losses as the cost of entertainment — not money to chase back.
